In the late 1800s, Wyandotte City (present-day Kansas City, Kansas) emerged as a beacon of hope for African Americans during the Exodusters period. Fleeing the South's oppressive conditions, they sought prosperity and opportunity in this new land. Despite the pervasive systemic racism, these resilient settlers, with their unwavering determination, established homes, churches, schools, and businesses, transforming Struggler's Hill into a vibrant community.
In 1999, Ida Louise and Noah Bland brought together a group of concerned neighbors to establish a neighborhood group. They incorporated "Struggler's Hill" into the name, reflecting the community's identity. The addition of "Roots" highlighted its historical significance, as explained in the film Struggler's Hill/Roots: A People, A Community, featured below.
The neighborhood was home to many notable residents. Bishop John Andrew Gregg, a distinguished leader in the AME Church and missionary to South Africa, was one of them. His contributions during World War II earned him the Army's Award of Merit, and his work promoting racial harmony gained him international recognition, a testament to the global impact of Struggler's Hill. Alex Haley, the acclaimed author of Roots, found inspiration for his work from “Cousin Georgia,” a resident of Struggler's Hill. Delano Lewis, a Sumner High School graduate, became the President of NPR and U.S. Ambassador to South Africa. Chester C. Owens Jr., the first African American elected to the Kansas City, Kansas, City Council in the 20th century, served two terms and briefly as deputy mayor in 1984. Owens was also a well-known African American historian interviewed on The History Makers. His wife, Lillie Anne Owens, was a trailblazer in business, becoming the first woman elected President and CEO of Crusader Life Insurance Company, and was featured in Ebony Magazine. The couple were prominent civil rights activists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.
Though the community faced decline due to economic shifts over the years, the legacy of Struggler’s Hill endures. Today, Struggler’s Hill-Roots is passionately dedicated to preserving this history, ensuring that the spirit of this community lives on and gives hope for the future.
